A printable Shopping Mall Scavenger Hunt Game with clues leading to a mystery item in the mall is the perfect solution for a memorable way to surprise your teens or tweens! What teenager doesn't love to shop and take selfies on a cell phone?
Looking for a FUN and engaging way to keep teens entertained, whether it’s for a birthday party or a rainy day? Try a Mall Scavenger Hunt! It’s the perfect activity that lets them explore, solve clues, and have a blast—all while enjoying some independence, just the way they like it!
Kids will put their detective skills to the test as they use the cipher decoder to reveal the items that need found in a shopping mall. This Mall Scavenger Hunt has TWO components; Part 1) Kids will read 12 riddles which will reveal a specific item to search for in the mall but they will NOT know the color scheme or specific item until they decipher the code words. Part 2) The code words include more specific details such as colors or patterns (example: pink stripes). After solving the riddle, finding the item, and snapping a picture, they will need to write the “code word” on their answer sheet. When all answers are completed, kids will use the numbers under the indicated letters to reveal the final item to seek.

How long does this activity take to complete?
It really depends on a lot of things. Estimated completion time is 20+ minutes but it’s based on the kids’ riddle skills, puzzle skills, group size, size of the mall and age. It is also HIGHLY based on handing them clue cards one by one and having them return to you or the game host in order to get their next clue. If you hand the kids all of the clues at once, it will expedite the scavenger hunt.
How many kids can play at once?
Kids can play individually, with friends, or with their siblings. If you are playing in teams as a competition, you will need to print multiple copies of each clue so that each team has their own set. Teams of 2-3 make this scavenger hunt a fun, “beat the clock” game. However, teams are not required as this game can be played with just one child.
Do the kids need a cell phone?
What teen or tween doesn’t love to take selfies! To prove that they found each mall item, kids will be instructed to snap a picture of the item with the clue card in their hand. So yes, cell phones or digital cameras are needed.
How do I set up the Scavenger Hunt?
To set up the Scavenger Hunt, you will need to print and cut the clue cards in half and read through the directions so you have an idea of how the game works. Be sure that kids have a pen with them when shopping the mall.
Do I need to chaperone the kids at the mall?
I prefer to be at the mall with them as the "game host" so that I can hand them each clue card one by one after they solve the riddle, find an item and snap a photo. If you prefer to just drop the kids off at the mall, that works too as they can text you their pictures. In this event, one kid will need to be in charge of holding onto the clue cards. I like to roam around and shop while the kids are off doing a scavenger hunt.
Do I need to offer a prize?
I would! Provide the kids with incentive to finish the game. It can be as simple as a cookie in the food court, money to shop with or any reward that works for you. The game instructions DO indicate that a “prize” will be given when they complete the game. The prize is up to you :)
Do kids have to make a purchase or does this game require them to have money in their pocket?
Nope! All they need to do is find the item and snap a picture with it. They do NOT need to make any purchases! If the clue asks for them to find a vanilla milkshake, they can just snap a picture of the menu item. However, you can certainly give them a few bucks to keep in their pocket if you want to :)
